The Holidays 2018
We’re calling them Holiday Art Parties!
Getting everyone in the holiday mood we started with Ribbon Wreaths!
Each wreath is unique and beautiful! Everyone participating was completely focused on the task at hand and was thrilled by the instant gratification bringing on many smiles and feelings of accomplishment.
~~~~~
We want to sincerely THANK the Reno Senior Advisory Committee for their generous sponsorship of our program in the fall of ’17. Our thankfulness is reflected in the beauty of the art created from the Hearts of our Alzheimer’s Artists!!
~~~~~
We want to also THANK Earl Shelton and the generous team of associates of Sephora Town Square in Las Vegas for their huge donation of glorious cosmetics for use by our artists. The bright and shimmering colors have inspired the original and unique images our artists put to paper!
~~~~~
We also want to heARTfully THANK Ms. Sandye Abele for creating a fundraising event in honor of Moments of Memory in Las Vegas!
~~~~~
We want to Thank Mike Micone of Micone Staffing here in Reno for his generous donations during Artown in 2017!!!
“This donation is made on behalf of a few people who are very special to me. Sue H. is a resident of Stone Valley and Robin R. is her daughter, I wanted to donate because she is the most loving daughter to her Mom and Dad and she is still very special to me. My Grandpa Micone is gone now, but lived with Alzheimer’s the last years of his life and when he didn’t recognize me my heart was ripped apart. I cried and then realized he still loved me and all the memories we spent together were such a gift! To all the people who take care of their parents I am giving this donation to help you too and find the love in your hearts.” Michael Micone
~~~~~
We want to thank Ms. Kathleen Turner for her very generous donation in memory of her precious brother
Buck Turner
Buck working on another masterpiece!
Buck was always a welcomed participant in our social group of artisans. He loved to paint and laugh and always, always greeted me with a big smile! You are missed my dear friend. We’ll look for your paintings in the clouds.
Dee found a copy of her favorite pumpkin pie recipe for her memory book!
Billie found her sterling silver pattern for her memory book!
Gayla’s first day in class inspired her artistic side! She was thrilled with the results and so were we!
Watercolor on canvas by Mary Ann K.
We started our Spring Fling with watercolor on canvas. Our artists usually have a heavy hand when it comes to painting. I asked Mary Ann if she liked her piece and she said “no”! So I took it and ran it under running water, removing most of the paint. What was left was this beautiful stained effect of a vase of florals left on the canvas, she loved it and so did everyone else! Here are some other examples:
Jeanette’s Ranunculus
Greg’s Butterfly in the Meadow on canvas
~~~~~
Our next spring project, inspired by printed paper napkins, was spring flowering bulbs. All the artists were fond of the tulips, and who wouldn’t be! Below is the finished work and other examples of our bloomin’ day!

Naida’s Pink Buds

Marilyn’s Color Burst
~~~~~
This was an interesting approach! I asked the artists to paint the water in a vase, but not the vase! I gave them only a bowl of water and a little blue paint. We were all thrilled with the results. Then I showed them how the water distorts the stems of flowers and asked them to add spring flowers to their vases. Below are more examples of our Spring Flinging:
3 Tulips by Linda
Spring colors by Marilyn
Shirley’s Glass Vase
~~~~~~

Monet’s Water Lilies by Louise
I’m very excited to present this project. Each artist selected a color photograph taken at Monet’s garden in Giverny, France. I asked them to paint just the colors and not the images. I did not show them any of Monet’s impressionistic paintings, but as you can see, Louise nailed it! So exciting!!!

Winter – 2016
Our Alzheimer’s Artists have welcomed in the Holidays with their original hand painted trees! They first used feathers and then their fingers to create the trees. Some may have added texture with a toothbrush and ornaments with a pencil eraser. Common utensils can create extraordinary results!
Feathers & fingers ~ Floral Fireworks by Linda!
These last 2 months have been a world-wind of creative activity in all our art classes!!! We have to get ready for the holidays in early November so we began by creating art with feathers and fingers. We started with florals to introduce the technique~
Feathers & Fingers Blue Floral by Louise!
Then we created holiday trees! It took only minutes to see the trees come to life, instant satisfaction for our artists!

Feathers & Fingers holiday trees!
Then we moved on to gift wrap! Using the plain white back of donated gift wrap our artists stamped patterns to their hearts delight. I cut the stamps from everyday sink sponges which adds texture and dimension.

Pretty Poinsettias by Barbara
Happy Holly by Jess

Happy Holiday Trees by Marilyn

Happy Holidays by Skeeter
On this day we had the pleasure of Skeeter’s son joining us for art class! A great time was had by all. We encourage family members to join us and assist their loved one with whatever art project we are doing. Participating together in a new endeavor, sharing new knowledge and creating new memories brings loved ones closer! Please come and enjoy the creative process with us, we all will enjoy your company!
Our next holiday project was creating strings of painted vellum paper holiday lights on green yarn which we hung in the windows! Due to a very generous donation of multi-colored nail polishes our artists ended the year creating fun and colorful greeting cards!

Handbags for the Homeless
I’ll try and make this short...a dear friend & supporter of Moments of Memory, Donna Rooney, mentioned she was going to drop off a dozen handbags at Goodwill. I asked if I could have them to fulfill a wish I had last year…to fill them with essential feminine goodies and give them to homeless women during the holidays. Donna dropped them off …they were gorgeous, brand name leather handbags that look brand new! I went to the dollar store and filled 12 bags with essential goodies. It cost approx. $5 to fill each handbag.
HANDBAGS for the HOMELESS, care of Moments of Memory. I do hope this leaves each woman with a small moment to remember.
Spring Project 2016:
To brighten our artist’s rooms they created Floral Garlands! They painted fresh, bright summer colors with acrylics in solids and visual textures as the first step in their garland project. Whimsical florals are drawn on the back of the painted paper and cut out. Circles are cut or torn and layered to create the centers for their fantasy florals. Leaves also adorn some of the florals for added dimension. They attached the florals to green yarn to create a 6′ long garland to adorn their windows or walls!
~~~~~A heartfelt Thank You to Ann Cancilla & Diana Roberts for their donations made in Memory of Edith Frisbee.
Our hearts are with the family of Edith Frisbee…a Moments of Memory artist since 2009…her endearing charm will be greatly missed, but we will speak of her often and keep her memory alive in our hearts.
“Reno-Tahoe International Airport and the Connector Collections Gallery was pleased to be the first public venue for the Moments of Memory: Art from the Hearts of Alzheimer’s Artists exhibit. The airport is honored to have been a part of this high-quality, huge-impact exhibit.
